Students Asked to Help PennDOT Improve Road Safety

PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) are inviting high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors to take part in the first PennDOT Innovations Challenge.

This is a great chance for Pennsylvania’s students to learn about the importance of safe driving and study the transportation challenges PennDOT faces.

Here’s how it works: Students working in teams of three to four students email their innovative solution to the PennDOT Bureau of Innovations. The submission must include an attachment containing the project title and description of no more than 500 words, outlining the team's concept. Along with the project description, all submissions must include the team name, full names of team members, faculty mentor name, school district and county.

Each PennDOT district will evaluate the submitted projects and select up to five district finalists who will be invited to present their projects in person at the PennDOT district office.

If your team is selected as a finalist, models, diagrams, videos and other visual aids or supporting materials should be used to demonstrate the team's project to the district judges. Final presentations should be no longer than 15 minutes. One winner will be selected in each PennDOT district who will then move on to compete in Harrisburg as part of the statewide competition where one statewide winner will be selected.

The challenge is open to Pennsylvania high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors in public, private or charter schools, and homeschooled students.

For the details on the Innovations Challenge, click here. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 31.
