State Rep. Duane Milne Presents House Resolution to Chester County Food Bank for Its Work Alleviating Hunger in County
2/2/2010

State Rep. Duane Milne, Ph.D. presented House Resolution (HR) 563 today to members of the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB).  The resolution, introduced by Rep. Milne last week in the PA House of Representatives, recognizes the food bank’s efforts in feeding the hungry of Chester County.

“It is my hope that, by calling attention to the great work done by food banks like Chester County’s, citizens all across Pennsylvania will be reminded that hunger does not take a holiday,” said Milne.  January and February are lean months for the Food Bank, which receives most of its food from donations and through a partnership with over 40 farms and community gardens.

Chester County ranks #2 in the state in the amount of food it produces; yet, one out of ten residents miss meals due to a lack of money to buy food.  Demand for food at certain cupboards like the one in West Chester is up 54% this year.  The same is true in Phoenixville, Coatesville and Parkesburg.  Each year the Chester County Food Bank delivers 1,000,000 pounds of food to 60 feeding sites throughout the county.  Every day the food bank works to feed 40,000 households, which includes 33,456 children, 70,369 adults and 21,753 elderly in Chester County.

Rep. Milne presented HR 563 to county officials at the West Chester Food Cupboard.  Accepting the resolution was Ruth Kranz-Carl, Director of the Chester County Department of Human Services, and Larry Welsch, Executive Director of the Chester County Food Bank.  Also present were Chester County Commissioners Carol Aichele, Terence Farrell, and Kathi Cozzone as well as board members of both the food bank and the West Chester Food Cupboard.

In addition to donations of non-perishable food from corporate food drives, community events and its partnership with local farms, the Chester County Food Bank also receives state funds through the PA Department of Agriculture.
