Proudly Celebrating Independence Day, and Doing so Safely

Historical origins of the holiday as celebration

More than 240 years ago this week in Philadelphia, the 13 American colonies signed the Declaration of Independence to break free from British rule and formalize our national independence. As chair of the House History Caucus, and doing my best on-line impersonation of a tour guide, allow me to direct your attention to some interesting information about the origins of July 4 as a holiday: click here.

On the road again

If you are traveling, check out, which is free and available 24 hours a day. The site, along with its Twitter handle @511pa, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 770 traffic cameras.

Also, please know PennDOT will close its driver license service centers on Wednesday, July 4. However, customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services, including all forms, publications and driver training manuals, online through PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services website,

There’ll be fireworks

While fireworks are now legal to purchase in Pennsylvania, certain aerial fireworks do require a permit and can only be used at events or concerts. Here are the rules from the Pennsylvania State Police.

Better yet: play it safe this Fourth of July and leave the fireworks to those with proper training and expertise.

Hot enough for ya!?!

An ongoing issue we will have to deal with is the excessive heat. It appears that temperatures will hover in the 90s throughout the week. It’s a good time to check out the PA Department of Health’s website to help watch out for heat-related issues

Don’t forget to check on neighbors for whom the heat might prove especially difficult.
All the best for a happy July Fourth, and let’s continue to count our many blessings as Americans!
