Schools Open: Respect the Bus

With many schools set to open this Monday, I just want to put a plea for all to maintain extra alertness when out on the road. We’ll all soon be sharing the road again with school buses and other school transportation vehicles that have not been part of our regular traffic flow for a few months now. Plus, far more critically, many kids will be along roadways during morning commute time waiting for those buses or disembarking later in the day. The children’s safety must come first…and not the interests of someone hurrying to get somewhere.

Please be aware that bus stops do shift over time, and new stops might be active this fall that were not in place before school let out for the summer. Pennsylvania law requires motorists to stop at least 10 feet away from school buses when their red lights are flashing and their stop arm is extended. It is gratifying to see that, in my experience, the vast majority of drivers allow buses (and kids!), much more space than this minimum.

As a reminder, vehicles cannot proceed in any manner until the bus red lights have been turned off and the stop arm is withdrawn…even if a motorist believes that the children have reached a safe spot. In particular, because this is mostly where I am aware of legal problems happening, that this standard includes not making a turn that is, in the mind of a motorist, somehow “away” from the bus and/or the path of children walking.

The penalties for failure to obey school bus safety laws can result in a $250 fine, five points on a driving record and a 60-day license suspension.

As always, thank you to the vast majority who continue to drive in a safe and responsible manner, and this benefits all of us!
