Changes at PennDOT Will Save You Time and Money

PennDOT has made a number of changes in 2017 to improve service.

Among the most significant: PennDOT will no longer issue or provide registration stickers to be placed on license plates.

Motorists are still required to maintain a valid and current registration and must present the registration card to law enforcement when asked. The valid registration card is also still required when having a safety inspection completed.

All motor vehicle forms and publications related to registrations have been updated to remove the reference of a “sticker” and are updated to reflect the two-year renewal option. The updated forms are available here.

New Two-Year Optional Renewal

Motorists may also elect to pay a two-year registration fee for a two-year registration period for certain types of motor vehicles. The fee shall be two times the amount of the registration fee payable for the vehicle registration. Motor vehicles registered under the International Registration Plan and a motor vehicle with a seasonal registration or circus carnival plate are not eligible to have a two-year registration.
Titling System Changes

Revisions to the Commonwealth Automated Titling and Registration Titling System (CARATS) were implemented over the past few months to allow for the two-year registration period. The vehicle Inquiry Detail screens include a field labeled “Reg Years.” This field indicates the amount of years in which the vehicle registration was renewed.

For initial issuance of registration plates using forms MV-I, MV-4ST, MV-I 20 or MV-I 40, the customer may opt to choose a two-year registration period. In addition, renewal coupons with an April 2017 expiration date or later will include both the one-year and the optional two-year registration fees. If the fee listed in the ‘2-yr fee” block on the registration renewal form is “N/A” that motor vehicle type is not eligible to renew for a two-year period.
Online Registration Enhancement

PennDOT’s website enhancements include the online registration renewal process where a customer can print his or her own registration credential. Motorists will no longer print a temporary registration credential nor will they need to wait for the delivery of their permanent credentials to be mailed.
